EMILY O'CONNOR: BLOG

Lots of finals for my final major project still underway, trying to get all the exciting shapes and colours that nature has to offer in terms of inspiration for my characterisation of fishes within my narrative images! I’m loving working with colouring pencils and watercolour pencils at the moment. I hold the pencil nearer the end to make more loose gestural marks.

After my tutorial, I have decided to go back to traditional media. I find that digital is too time consuming, and has less texture and ‘life’. Which is what I think my pictures need to convey. I will progress by producing 5 character-scene images.

Development, development, development.

I have started doing roughs and development work back in my sketchbooks, I’ve missed the materials and glad that I have gone back to analog.

New progress with my final major project!

Pele for Sketch Dailies, she could admittedly do with more work, but I need to get on with my finals for my book project!

hellohappyholly asked: Hello! Just so you know those Cath Kidston designs were SO PRETTY! Very cute and very vintage :)

Answer:

Ahh thankyou so much! :)

Well, after a HUGE amount of growling and frowning on my part, I’ve managed to complete my mini day project that I set for myself for the YCN competition brief; to design a pattern with three different colour sets for Cath Kidston. I came up with the initial theme of vintage/1950’s ‘space and sci-fi’, but after researching, Cath had already rolled out a lovely print along the same lines. So I came up with the idea of fun fair, there was loads of great imagery for me to play with and I did enjoy brainstorming and following it up within 24 hours!

Really enjoying getting back into colour for my concepts. This is an environmental spread, just to get me doodling and drawing up ideas for the jungle backgrounds!

Concept for my current book project!
I’ve really (reaaaally) missed working in colour, I find black and white so boring now, cannot wait to get onto finals so I can use a crazy amount of colours and shades and create something special!
